The 2017 Vintage:
2017 delivered excellent spring rains and occasional summer rainfall. The harvest was plentiful with delayed ripening. Despite the rain, the vines remained healthy and there was little pressure from pests and disease.
The Vineyard:
All fruit was Estate grown and sourced from east and west facing blocks on either side of the Mount Camel Range. The vines are unirrigated and very low yielding. They are cane-pruned by hand and wrapped to a single wire trellis to encourage some bunch shading during the heat of summer.
The Winemaking:
The fruit in the Hallmark Shiraz was picked over a period of three weeks, at varying stages of ripeness. The grapes were hand-picked and fermented in small open vats for two weeks, basket pressed, and aged in 25% new French oak for 18 months. The components that make up the Hallmark were determined during an intensive blending session in July 2018 to ensure that the Hallmark is the selection of the finest barrels and vats of the 2017 vintage.
