The 2017 Vintage Season:
2017 delivered excellent spring rains and occasional summer rainfall. The harvest was plentiful with delayed ripening. Despite the rain, the vines remained healthy and there was little pressure from pests and disease.
All fruit was estate grown, sourced from north facing slopes of the Dowd’s Lane vineyard. The vines are exposed to the summer sun which encourages the extent of ripening needed to produce the robust character of a wine like the Monster. The vines are unirrigated and very low yielding. They are cane-pruned by hand, and wrapped to a single wire trellis to encourage some bunch shading during the heat of summer.
The fruit in the Monster was picked over a period of three weeks, although the major proportion was harvested late, at the peak of ripeness. The grapes were hand picked and fermented in small open vats for two weeks, basket pressed, and aged in 25% new French oak for 18 months. The wine has neither been filtered or fined.
